A Taste of "Home"

On Day 823...

In 7-12 minutes a black ford explorer will be rolling into our apartment complex, and for a brief 24 hour period Rachel A. & Julia W. will be here! They could not have picked a better time either, everything is blooming and it is about 75 with a very light breeze. So... Drew & I shall make a feeble attempt at showing two Northerners the South in a day.

A Story

On Day 818...

She stepped into the old, musty building slightly before noon on Thursday. It was a new place and she felt conspicuous, even though no one had even noted her arrival. As she waited she noted the people around her; a man cover in tattoos, an elderly woman, a happy couple, a young girl with a nose ring... all with the same purpose. All waiting for their moment to be called forward. Before long the moment was upon her. NEXT!

As she sunk into the chair the all too familiar feelings washed over her: butterflies in her stomach, her heart pounding in her ears, a feeling of panic. What if I don't remember? What if I don't pass? What happens if I fail? And yet there was nothing she could do but proceed. One by one she answered the questions... trying desperately to recall the information she had reviewed just moments before. And finally... after what seemed to be an endless stream of questions, it was over. And...

I PASSED! I now have a valid NC Driver's License... complete with a totally humiliating picture. :)

Thought for the Day

On Day 812...

I realize this is my third post today... my third in less than an hour... but if I don't write it now I won't remember what I was going to say. I need to write as the Spirit moves... or something...

Yesterday morning Drew and I met with the pastor of the church we are pretty sure we will be attending (it is a PCA church). We discussed everything from the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Book of Church Order to denominations and infant baptism.

During our discussion though, he brought up something I had never really thought about but that I see is everyone that I know. He said that the average person who did not/does not attend church has no sense of the glory of God, they only see the "God of the tsunami." However children that are raised in a Bible believing church either learn to love and cling to God's glory or it haunts them for the rest of their lives.

Just something to think about. :)

Old Habits

On Day 812...

I still remember when I was 12 & 13 waiting until my parents went to bed (their bedroom was right above mine, so I could hear every step) and then I would sit and read until 2 or 3 in the morning. I would finish a book in one night, I just couldn't put it down.

Well, college ruined me. Not only did it all-but-kill my love for reading I also lost the ability to read one book from beginning to end. Well, this flawed habit is not reflected in what is on my bookshelf. Currently I am reading:

1. The Complete Financial Guide for Young Couples (Larry Burkett). Call me a geek but I am really enjoying it and have learned a lot.

2. Desiring God (John Piper). Another great book, I am only a few chapters into it, but it is one that my dad told me to read so I decided that after about 9 years I would stop putting it off :).

3. Sacred Marriage (I don't know remember the author). The book was given to us as a gift by some of our closest friends and we are reading it together.

4. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I have to be in the right mood to read this one, but it great as well. YELLOW.

5. Secrets of the Heart. Indulging my girly-13-year-old side, this is a book about a mail order bride. Simple but fun and easy to read.

Back from the Dead

On Day 812...

Does anyone have any toothpicks? After a wonderful, but tiring week with my family toothpicks are about the only things that would keep my eyes open. Here is why I need them:

1. The Flu - when Nathan (my 15 year-old brother) got off the airplane he was sick and it only got worse. By day 2 his fever was well over 103. So needless to say, this put a bit of a damper on their time here.

2. Time Change - Because of the two-hour time difference my mom was just getting started when Drew and I usually head for bed at 9pm. My brother and sister-in-law are also night people and would come and visit with my mom and buzz until the wee hours of the morning and I just couldn't be left out of all the fun... right?

3. Guys & Dolls - Asheville Christian Academy (where Drew went to school) put on a wonderful performance of Guys & Dolls and after 3 hours of singing on a Friday night... who can go to bed before 11? Did you know that you can pull off the plan without anyone kissing or any skin showing while the show girls were dancing?

4. SUGAR! - I have not had sugar since we moved down here, but my mother was cooking so I had more ice cream and sugar that I have had in months. I didn't remember how hyper it made me. :)

Late Nights...

On Day 803...

Since moving to Asheville, Andrew and I have started going to bed early. We are usually in bed by 9:30, so when we stay up late, we must have a good reason. Well, last night was one of them. I found plane tickets from Salt Lake City to Asheville for $120 each! So last night at 10:39 I picked up by mom and two brothers (Nate & Buzz) from the airport and crammed 3 suitcases, a guitar, 4 backpacks and 4 people into our tiny little Honda. We had a great time, and Jonathon & Krysten even stopped by to say Hello! So by the time everyone left it was well past midnight, bit it was worth it.

We will do our best to give them the "full" Asheville experience... from the Biltmore and the Grove Park Inn to the "art" and culture of the downtown crowd. We are also going to see the play Guys a Dolls and The Incredibles at the local dollar theatre/pizza joint/brewery. Here's to 7 days of fun!

The Search Continues...

On Day 797...

We have been in Asheville for over a month now and our search for a church home continues... It feels as if we have been searching for decades... In our desperation we even resorted to pulling out the phone book and reading down the list of churches searching for one that has a website... or at least an answering machine. Did you know there is a Zen Center of Asheville? And what is a Christian Reading Room? And the King of Glory Church asks that you write down all the revelations you receive from the Holy Spirit and pass them to an usher as quickly as possible. All that to say that our possibilities are... endless :-P The fact that there are about 900 churches in Asheville as made the search that much more difficult. So far we have visited: Trinity Presbyterian, Grace Presbyterian Community Church, Mountain View Baptist Church, Blue Ridge Bible Church, Biltmore Baptist Church, Gateway Christian Community Church and the most recent being Grace & Peace Mission. Although the latter has been the best we have tried so far, it did not feel like home to either of us. (The fact that we were distracted by the 2-year-old in front of us who peed all over her father, the chair, the floor and the hymnal during the sermon probably didn't help with our concentration... but still).

However, the search has brought us to our knees and has really made us think about what is important in a church. It has been enlightening and humbling to visit so many churches in such a short period of time. In the past six weeks only one church have I really been fed spiritually and really felt like I worshiped, and not because the music was great, but rather because my walk with the Lord was deepened. All that to say, we still do not know where we will be attending, and we probably have more questions than before, however this experience has increased our faith and and deepened our relationship with our Heavenly Father... and in the end... isn't that all that matters?
